Explorers Report of activities 2005
I might as well give you all some updates, on how the post went this year.
I am on a roll here. Advisors: Officer Bill Meier & Chris Hunt are the
advisors. The Post size is approx 15 members. Monday
night meetings at Center 375 (formely known as Vernon Elementary) Rt 30.
Serving the towns of Vernon, Ellington, Tolland, Bolton, So Windsor. Regular business meeting as well as police training are the typical
agenda. Stations Day: Explorers attend Stations Day @ Conn State
Police, Meriden, CT. A day long Law Enforcement
exercise from weapons fire to Domestice abuse. Like a mini-Police Academy.
Attended by 500 Explorers.
Pasta Dinner: A Pasta
Dinner benefit was held at the Rockville Elks. We were able to raise approx
$1000 from this. (This remembers me so much of Bob Ahnert)
Pasta Dinner Crew
The Crew: Volunteers were Paul Nicholas & Bob Hoffman (as Head
Chefs), Julie Tacey, (Head of
"Bugs-us-all"), Tracey Walker Oakes, Paul Kulikowski, steady Eddy
Orlowski, Wanda Henderson, Mike Whipple, Bruce Gaffield and myself. Wanda & Julie were very impressive when it came to finding donations. They both did a fantastic job.
Video: Mike Whipple & Bruce Gaffield came in from Portland,
Oregon. They were here to shoot footage on the Explorers in action. Mike &
Bruce shot events at Stations Day, the Pasta Dinner and then did several
interviews at Community Voice Channel, with Lt. Mike Greenier, Officer Meier
& Hunt. Mike is editing the 10 hours worth of footage as I write this update.
Watch out when Mike gets on a roll. Mothers Day Dash (formerly known as the Vernon Rabbit run), Jesusfest, ( a country music religious Fest at the TAC building).
Fourth of July Fireworks. CT Explorer Police Academy, at Eastern Conn State University. A week
long Police Academy with 500 Explorers & 100 Advisors. (After Helen died in 2004, the CT Academy started a scholarship for 1
Police Explorer each year.) July 2005: 2 Explorers attended specialty Police Academies. US Marshall's & US Army. Located in DC & Fort
Leonard, MO. Wapping fair in So
Windsor, CT. They asked the Vernon Explorers to cover parking for their 4 day
event. So we brought in Manchester & Enfield Explorers to help. ( 4 days, 12
hr days & 5 positions is a lot of man hours.)
Christmas Scavenger Hunt: The finale was the Christmas Scavenger
hunt. What a blast this was. 2
weeks before their Christmas Party, they have to track down items, like a
Detective. Grand Prizes were a Bearcat Scanner, a rechargeable Mag-light & a gift
certificate to Dick's sporting goods. Check
out the list of things on the scavenger hunt. In 2006: The Post is attending the National Police Academy in Arizona.
